Under the control of the Dutch for nearly 400 years, tourism now plays a huge part in its economy and whilst sailing and snorkeling are very popular, without doubt when it comes to water based activities in Aruba diving is by far the biggest draw, and brings people from all corners of the world to explore the incredible waters that lie off shore.

Coco is looking for friends and family members

Aruba Bound
We would like to introduce you to Coco, one of the donkeys that has found shelter at the Aruban Donkey Sanctuary. Coco was found in the Seroe Colorado district. Although she was limping badly, she was not easy to catch. For these cases our stun gun is the only solution. Because Coco’s front leg was dislocated and she was walking on the side of her hoof, we went straight to the vet, but after looking at her X-ray, he stated that dislocation was the culprit. He straightened her leg right away; that was easy as Coco was still under sedation. The donkey then had to wear a plaster cast for three weeks; we kept her skin clean and disinfected and now she only has a tiny scar to prove that she has ever been injured. Coco is not limping any longer and together with her fast friend Maartje she is enjoying her life at the Donkey Sanctuary.

Buri is looking for friends and family members

Aruba Bound
We would like to introduce Buri to you, one of the donkeys that find a home at the Aruban Donkey Sanctuary. He owes his name to the fact that he was found in Sjabururi. That in itself is quite a story. At first catching him was a breeze: together with someone from the fire brigade we lured him into a garden, but then the main artery in an old wound in his behind burst and it became a bloody situation. Once in the trailer the vet was called and he came in to stitch the wound and remove a rusty can from one of his hind legs. When Buri was healed he jumped the gate and disappeared in the cunucu. What we did not know at the time was that the vet had provided Buri with a chip. Years later a gorgeous, castrated white donkey was standing in front of our gate. Because we had no idea who it was, we looked for a chip. We could not find one, so we baptized him Mystery Man and chipped him. Two years later we discovered that Mystery Man already had a chip from the vet as well. And yes: Buri and Mystery Man proved to be one and the same. We had not recognized him as he had a reddish fur at the time; now he was very light in color.

Bandit is looking for friends and family members

Aruba Bound
We would like to introduce Bandit to you: a donkey that finds his home at the Aruban Donkey Sanctuary. We happened to discover him trespassing. During feeding time he jumps away from the herd, runs for a while and comes back to eat. And that ritual was not known to the volunteers, so they went to investigate. And yes, the donkey was an intruder, who had jumped the fence to come inside. Together with a few visitors, the donkey was herded into a coral, because a stallion is not allowed to be in the herd. The helpful visitors named this donkey Bandit, because of his `criminal’ behavior. After his castration Bandit was released into the herd and he was accepted really fast. Normally that might take a while, but Bandit was welcome after one day already. He is a gorgeous, but shy donkey. He is not dominant, but petting him or having him pose for a picture remains a problem.
