Orchid welcomes friends and family members

Aruba Bound

We would like to introduce Orchid to you, one of the donkeys that has found a home at the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary. Before Orchid came to live at the sanctuary, she was a daredevil, sauntering in the middle of the road together with her daughter Cymbi. This dangerous lifestyle came to an end when the inhabitants of Rooi Master lured her and nine other donkeys into their garden. A trailer took all of them to the sanctuary, where Orchid delivered a son named Gismo after two days. Orchid had a hard time adjusting to life at the sanctuary: she had to get used to the other donkeys as well as to the people there. She was so stressed out that she refused any food during her first two weeks with us, but everything became much better when we succeeded in catching her daughter Cymbi. Their reunion was emotional and very, very happy and from that moment on, life became much more agreeable for Orchid.

Aramis would like some friends and family members

Aruba Bound

We would like to introduce Aramis to you, one of the donkeys that has found a home at the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary. We have never seen a donkey that was so easily accepted by the herd as Aramis. Normally it takes quite a while before the herd accepts a newcomer, but with Aramis and his friend Ninja it went without a hitch. We only separated them for one night, but one noticed that the herd was not opposed to this gorgeous, dark grey donkey. So put into the herd, and loving every moment at the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary. Aramis can look forward to staying a long, long time with us, as he is just four years old.

This beautiful donkey has been provided with a chip, just like all the other donkeys. On the chip is information about the donkey and its medical history. The donkeys at the sanctuary have a lot of friends with whom they can play all day long. And they love living there: they are well-cared for, they are fed and watered and when they are sick the vet is called. Yes, they are expensive customers for the sanctuary.

The volunteers are trying to cover the various costs with all kinds of activities and the sale of great donkey memorabilia in the shop. Fortunately, there are also visitors who wish to adopt a donkey, who buy something at the donkey shop or who make a donation. Thus they help support us. Everyone is welcome to visit the sanctuary, which has opening hours from 9 am until 4 pm and in the weekend from 10 am until 3. Entry is free of charge and one can enjoy a soft drink, a cup of coffee or a refreshing ice cream.

The volunteers of the sanctuary are hoping that somebody will adopt this friendly, lovely donkey. Of course the donkey will keep on living at the sanctuary; you only need to pay AWG. 30,-- [$16.76 USD] per month for the donkey’s keep. With this amount you help support the sanctuary as well as your own donkey. And you will receive a beautiful certificate and a super T-shirt and your name and photo will be posted on our website. So please call the sanctuary at 593-2933; you can also register via the website www.arubandonkey.org or donate money on bank account number 40.03.025 at the Aruba Bank! Just do it! Maestro is on the look-out for friends and family members

Aruba Bound

Maestro is one of the donkeys that has found a home at the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary. He was brought in together with his mother Bunny, sometime early in 2013. Shortly afterwards he got a baby brother. Unfortunately, his mother is very strict and he is not allowed to be in the vicinity of the baby donkey. That is understandable, as Amadeus is not pleased at all to play second violin. That is why his mother is keeping him away, for a jealous donkey may be very dangerous to a young animal.

Maestro is a lovely, quiet donkey with a blaze on his forehead.

This beautiful donkey has been provided with a chip, just like all the other donkeys. On the chip is information about the donkey and its medical history. Dreaming of Aruba and...

Bitterballen

Aruba Bound

So yesterday morning I awoke hungry after dreaming of Bitterballen. I tried a Bitterbal years ago at a happy hour cocktail party but cannot recall how it tasted. Does this mean it was unremarkable for me not to remember? Either way, the dream let's me know that I am anticipating our December visit to the Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort.

In case you are not familiar with the plural of Bitterbal, Bitterballen- as in a whole plateful of Bitterbals, they are a Dutch meat based snack. Think of them as being similar to croquettes. Most often they contain a minced or chopped, beef or veal mixture. This is then combined with beef broth, butter, flour for a thickening agent, parsley, salt and pepper. The result is a thick ragout.

Some recipes also add nutmeg or curry powder or finely chopped vegetables such as carrots. The ragout is then refrigerated and left to thicken before being rolled into 1 to 1 1/2 inch balls. The balls are then coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried. As you can see they are served with a mustard sauce for dipping.

Amadeus adopts Amadeus

Almost five years ago, popular restaurant Amadeus opened its doors just a few hundred yards from the traffic circle at Tanki Leendert. Because the restaurant is owned by Austrian chef Thomas Mitter, he named it Amadeus after the famous Austrian composer, Wolgang Amadeus Mozart. Even the interior decoration reflects the era and the ground floor is a copy of a room where Mozart performed in Vienna. The dishes, however, are modern fortunately, with of course the Austrian `Wiener Schnitzel’ playing a starring role in the menu; it is called Mozart’s Surf & Turf.

"...Passengers will eventually be able to read e-books, play games, and watch videos on their devices during all phases of flight, with very limited exceptions. Electronic items, books and magazines, must be held or put in the seat back pocket during the actual takeoff and landing roll. Cell phones should be in airplane mode or with cellular service disabled – i.e., no signal bars displayed—and cannot be used for voice communications based on FCC regulations that prohibit any airborne calls using cell phones. If your air carrier provides Wi-Fi service during flight, you may use those services. You can also continue to use short-range Bluetooth accessories, like wireless keyboards. ..."

How Has the Weather Been in Aruba?

October through mid-January has always been the rainy season in Aruba. La Niña in 2010-2012 did bring more rain to the island however things are now back to normal. The Aruba Department of Meteorology had only recorded 6.27 inches of rain January to August this year. Unofficial rainfall up to October 20 is closer to 10 inches, which is only slightly below average.

Keep in mind, that if there is a tropical storm or low in the area there will be higher quantities of rain. Having said that, the rain in Aruba, even during rainy season falls mainly overnight and early morning with an occasional passing shower (those happen all year 'round) during the day.

We have been to Aruba 3 times during rainy season- Christmas & New Years (twice) and once mid-January. 2 out of 3 trips we saw very little rain. One trip over Christmas and New Years we had rain every single day. HOWEVER, the rain on all but 2 of a 13 day vacation was always over and the sun out shining brightly by 10 am. One day was overcast and one day was morning sprinkles off and on. The day of sprinkles the sun was out and skies clear at 3 pm. We toured the island on the overcast day and snorkeled on the sprinkle day. ;)

Setar fundraising event with super proceeds for the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary

Aruba Bound
During the past two months telecom provider Setar has done a wonderful job for the Aruban Donkey Sanctuary: through an sms-fundraising event participants could win terrific weekly prizes. The event has generated a whopping AWG. 7.500,-- [$4188.92 USD], which is a very welcome amount, seeing that a new sanctuary is being built at Bringamosa.

The current sanctuary is a tight fit for the large number of donkeys, now already more than 130, so our donkeys has been divided over three locations, among them the private garden of a board member. By means of various fundraising events and donations we hope to be able to get all the donkeys united on one site.
