Aruba, An Island of Culinary Riches

ARUBA February 9th, 2013- An executive chef, sous chef, pastry chef, bartender, wait staff — these are the typical professionals you expect to be part of a food and beverage function. But an artist and a musician? During the Aruba Tourism Authority’s “Taste of Aruba” event, all of them were integral to the success of the evening. This event intertwined the artistry, culture, and cuisine of Aruba.

The cold, slushy Manhattan streets were forgotten as guests descended into The Kitchen NYC, a state-of-the-art kitchen studio, production, and event space that was transformed with the colors and warmth reminiscent of the island.

A heartfelt welcome speech was given by Otmar Oduber, Minister of Tourism, Transportation and Labor Affairs, who is said to be the driving force behind Aruba’s growing and evolving tourism industry. Lobster was served with a cilantro avocado crème, compressed watermelon, cashew nuts, and a lemon-lime dressing that together resembled a coral reef. Not only did the dish evoke the sea but so did the beautiful piano arrangement performed by Jonathan Vieira, director of Aruba’s Center for the Performing Arts, Cas di Cultura, and the founder and executive producer of the Aruba International Film Festival. Viera performed a different song for each course.

Safe at last

Aruba Bound

Some two years ago the volunteers of the Donkey Sanctuary received a phone call: an accident had happened and donkeys were involved. At the site it appeared that one donkey had died and one wounded donkey had disappeared: he probably had a broken front leg. During two years the volunteers have moved heaven and earth to catch this specific donkey in the San Nicolas vicinity. Many inhabitants have made calls, helping the sanctuary to catch him. Two hundred calls about two donkeys, one of which had a broken leg. But even though he was handicapped, he escaped. Until the moment that the Kellner family in San Nicolas could lure him and his friend into their garden; they closed the gate and voilà.

Aruba Birdlife Conservation launches website

Aruba Bound
ARUBA January 31st, 2013– is a very special day for Aruba Birdlife Conservation. The board of the foundation is happy that its website was launched. The website is, among others, intended to improve awareness of the beauty Aruba’s bird wildlife has to offer and through such inspire the leaders of our nation to protect it for future generations to come. The website is for young and old and for locals as well as guests, but above all for our teachers, students and pupils. The location chosen for the launch is no coincidence, a school library.
